seeing red

It's another scrappy Saturday, and this month it's RED.   I sat down and whipped up a crayon strip, and a "circle of squares" block.

Next week I may have a quilt top to show off -- I've emptied out my red scrap bin and  started putting together another "anything goes" strips & bits quilt.   Stay tuned!

scrappy Saturday

It's another scrappy rainbow Saturday, and I'm linking up to the challenge blog.

This is TEAL month, but you can see I also did a little catch-up for last month's PURPLE.  I can't remember where I first saw the "squares in a circle" block, and I printed out the tutorial without the web address...  if anyone knows where this is online, please let me know and I'll update the post.

Edited to add:  Kathy of Slow Stitching Sunday is making the "squares in a circle" blocks. The original pattern is at Toefeather.  (Thanks, Sally!)

Deep Purple

It's the last Rainbow Scrap Challenge Saturday for January, and I have a big finish to show off!

I pretty much emptied my bin of purple scraps! There's a little of everything in there, including a couple of precious Laurel Burch cats...figs.. bees.   It will go off to the guild's collection for various children's groups.

On to February!

rainbow scrappiness

This month's color is purple...

I started a set of blocks in purples and blues last year, but never made enough to do anything, so I've picked them up again.  Here are a bunch of new ones:

And I took some more purple scraps and made a set of coins -- I don't know what these will end up being.  There's a cute crayon pattern I saw on a blog recently, and it's a good bet this will end up as part of that quilt.

For 2016, I finished my quilt top of Fancy Forest animals -- you can find it on my last post, here.

Now I must go and clean the batting on my design wall.  Yikes!

a few 2016 finishes...

I thought I'd start the new year by posting photos of the last few things I finished up last year.  The first 2 are tops that I had quilted by Tami at The Quilted Lemon.  These were done with pantographs she adjusted to the size I wanted, and she is always helpful and does a lovely job!

First is a free pattern on the Cloud 9 Fabrics site -- with nice big pieces, so it was a quick project.

The next is an old Atkinson Designs pattern called "Fire Escape" that I did in batiks.

Finally, my Rainbow Scrap Challenge project -- now all together with the borders. This is from Elizabeth Hartman's "Fancy Forest" pattern, with my own arrangement, and using mostly hand-dyed fabrics from Vicki Welsh.  This is pretty much the only quilt I've made with a white background, and I love the way the colors pop!

I also finished a cotton blouse that has been in the works for so long I can't remember -- either 6 or 8 years.  I dug it out of the closet a few months ago and had to re-invent what my plan was, since it seemed to be cut out in a variety of random sizes.  Then it sat for a couple of months more, just needing the sleeves hemmed!

Finally, an up-to-date photo of Lucy and Linus.  They've developed an appreciation for quilts and quilting -- I now have to throw a sheet over anything on a flat surface that isn't meant to be a cat bed...

part of a rainbow

It's the last day of this year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge and I decided I'd better get my act together and finish one of the tops I started...  the rest are just little piles of blocks.

Edited to add: the top is all put together now, except a white border all the way around!  The pinks look a bit orange in the photo, and I could have spent more time arranging the colors...  but I try not to obsess too much.

This top is nearly done.  I didn't make it all the way through the rainbow, but it's big enough for me. The fabrics are almost all from the set of  Vicki Welsh's hand-dyes.

I just need to make one more butterfly for the space above the green fox (because the first one came out way too small for some reason!), and then add a few strips for fill-ins and sashing. I'm planning to finish it up this afternoon. Since the new butterfly will be purple, maybe I can make that count for January, too?

it's that Cotton Robin thing again!

The weather has changed to "sweater" so it must be time to start up a new round of the Cotton Robin...

See this post from last year for basic rules, and send a comment or email me if you want to join in. The more, the merrier, right?  This year's official announcement is here and last year's Big Reveal is here.

If you've participated in the past and want to invite a friend or two with some quilting skills, please do.  Having said that, of course we're trying to avoid quality control issues!  It is expected that you can cut and stitch a straight line (if you're making something that requires straight lines!) and have familiarity with the various parts of making a quilt...

And, I can't let you go without a few recent pictures of Lucy and Linus:

Linus in his favorite spot -- the bucket that he barely fits into
Lucy watching the world through the porthole
Lucy's on top this time -- an unusual occurrence!
